Tips On Your Fall Family Photo Wardrobe

The leaves will be changing color soon and I can already smell the pumpkin spiced lattes. The fall is one of my favorite times of the year to do family photo sessions. The light in the late afternoon is so warm and mixes beautifully with the browns and reds. The ground is pretty dry and the weather can be still very warm here in the Lehigh Valley making it a great time to capture those family shots.

Once you have booked your fall family photo session the next step is to decide what you and your family will wear at your session.  Below I have put together a few tips on picking out the perfect outfits for your fall family photos.

Coordinate Your Colors - Put together colors that coordinate well together in advance. Determine each member being photographed and lay out what they will wear. Don’t try to be matchy matchy. Pulling in pops of fall colors with something neutral, like a denim works well together. You have to do this with each member that is going to be photographed and you want to be sure that you don’t have too many identical colors.

Pick Wisely With Prints - If picking a print to wear for fall photos make sure you’re not going crazy. They should be subtle prints like in a shirt under a sweater or a scarf. Make sure it’s not going to overpower your outfit or take away from others in the photos. You see these prints on children more than adults and that is what I prefer. The colors in the print should be the same as the palate you decide to work from.

Knits - Knits are great for fall photos. They add some texture to the shot.

Logos - Stay away with anything that has a logo on it. We want these photos to be all about you and your family, not about a big brand or a sports team! Logos can be very distracting on the backdrop of beautiful fall foliage.

Accessories - I love when my families add accessories to their fall photos. Scarves and hats are great additions. Remember, you’re outdoors, have fun with this and add some fashionable pieces to your outfit.

Bright Colors Are Bad! -  Think about it, the backdrops are going to be orange, reds, and golds. You want to play off what your backdrop will be. I will help guide you knowing the date of your shoot to let you know where in the process the trees should be which will help you make decisions.

Layer - Layering clothes is a great way to make your fall photo session look well rounded. It not only will help you plan for the day, because it’s hard to determine if it will be too cool or too hot for your appointment but it will also allow us to play with some of that. Layered clothes showing different textures and colors is always a stand out in a photo. It lets you have some easy outfit changes too.

If there is a family dog or dogs, let us bring them to the session! Be aware of the color for the dog and what you are wearing. A black dog sitting on a dark outfit on an owner will make for a muddy mess, so be aware that the backdrop of clothing on the owner needs to pop the dog.

Overall, we want to have a fun experience together and I want your photos to be exactly what you want. Have fun with it and if you have any questions I’m here to answer them. I’m looking forward to all the families I’ll be creating memories with this fall.
